Frequently Asked Questions

We want you to be confident that you’re booking the right experience for you.

We get asked lots of questions about our expeditions. Some of them crop up quite often and you’ll find the answers to them here. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Are there any age restrictions?

Our open expeditions (both on land and on the water) are for over 18’s only – there is no upper age limit. If you book a private expedition then anyone over 14 can attend as long as there is one responsible adult for each under 18.

Can I bring my own equipment?

We supply everything you need for your expedition apart from sleeping bags (but we do have some you can borrow). On our SUP expeditions (apart from Unsupported Wye) you must use our boards due to transport restrictions and also so we can be sure we have plenty of appropriate spare parts. You can bring your own buoyancy aid if you wish, it must conform to ISO12402. For walking expeditions you can bring your own equipment if you prefer. We will check it is suitable before setting out.

Can I bring my dog?

Unfortunately due to the nature of our expeditions dogs are not allowed to join in the fun. Of course, to ensure our experiences are as inclusive as possible, we do allow trained assistance dogs to accompany their owners. Please contact us before booking to chat about your requirements.

I’m vegetarian/vegan. Can you cater for me?

Definitely. A lot of our menu is vegetarian – it saves trying to keep meat fresh on a sunny campsite. There will always be a veggie option if it’s needed. Just make sure you let us know on the booking form.

What about Halal or Kosher meals?

We can’t supply Halal or Kosher meals but there will always be a vegetarian option if it’s needed.

I have an allergy/intolerance/specific diet. Can you help?

We’ll do our best to accommodate your diet. Gluten/dairy free alternatives can be made available on request – the more notice the better. We do our best to eliminate the risk of cross contamination but due to the social nature of food preparation (particularly lunches) this cannot be guaranteed. If in doubt, contact us before booking and make sure all relevant information is on the booking form.

My medical/dietary requirements have changed since I sent in my booking form.

Not a problem, just send us an email as soon as possible to let us know.

I’m thinking of coming by myself. Will you look after me?

Of course we will. Our small groups ensure that everyone is made to feel welcome and included. Many of our clients arrive by themselves and leave with new life-long friends.

What’s the accommodation like?

Small and draughty! All our expeditions are currently based at campsites. We supply quality tents and comfy sleep mats suitable for the type of activity you’re doing. Campsites vary in facilities but all are chosen for their stunning locations and to minimise any travel.

Who are your instructors?

We work with a range of professional outdoor instructors. All are chosen not only for their appropriate qualifications but also their local knowledge and ability to gel a group of random strangers into a close knit band of outdoor adventurers. Above all they will make sure your time with us is an enjoyable and memorable experience.

What do I need to bring?

We aim to make your expedition as stress free as possible so try to provide you with most of the things you need. There are kit lists in the “General Info” section of the website. We will also send these to you a couple of weeks before your arrival date.

Will I have to put my tent up or do the dishes?

For the majority of our expeditions camp will be set up when you arrive and will be taken down when you leave. You’re not expected to lend a hand with cooking or washing up but we’re not likely to turn down an offer of a helping hand. This doesn’t apply to Unsupported Wye or Wild Camp Wannabes where you’ll be expected to be much more self-sufficient.

What happens if I can no longer travel?

Have a look at our terms and conditions. We’ll do our best to work with you to find an alternative date. Just make sure you give us as much notice as you can.

I can’t make any of the dates. Can you arrange a private expedition?

Yes, we can. We’d need a minimum of four people in your group to make it happen. Simpy get in touch to discuss your requirements and we’ll do our best to find something that fits.

I’m arriving by public transport. How do I get to the campsite?

We’ll work with you to get you as close to the camp as possible and if your timings fit we’ll come and collect you. If not we’ll help you find a taxi. Due to the remote locations of some sites choices may be limited so, as with most things, the more notice you give us the more chance we have of helping you out.

Why should I book with Black Grouse?

In a nutshell – our experience, our passion and our commitment to a great customer experience. Our small groups minimises our impact on the environment, ensures that everyone receives that personal touch and gets to enjoy the peace and solitude of some fantastic locations. We consider our expeditions to offer amazing value for money. Above all, whatever you choose to book, we’re confident that you will have an amazing, safe and memorable time with us.

Small groups. Big smiles.
